Speak Out on the Future on the Olympic National Forest

As you may know, the Forest Service is embarking on a five-year process to determine how to maximize recreation opportunities for the public with limited funding.  Known as Recreation Facility Analysis (RFA), this process will help each forest determine its unique recreation niche, and identify sites that best help them manage the forest in accordance to that niche.

You can help shape the future of the forests by attending a meeting or sending your comments on a RFA proposal to the Forest Service.

Background

In the Olympic National Forest, seventy-seven sites were evaluated as part of the RFA process, including trailheads, campgrounds, cabins, interpretive/observation sites and horse camps. The sites were evaluated and ranked based on the amount of recreation use, financial efficiency and sustainability.

From this process the forest has devoloped a proposed  five-year plan that would act as a framework for the forest's managament.

According to Dean Yoshina, Recreation Staff Officer and Hood Canal District Ranger for the Olympic National Forest, ?The goal of the RFA is to create a sustainable recreation program and cut the backlog in maintenance while continuing to meet the needs of our visitors."

What you can do

Although trails are not included in the RFA process, many of these sites are regularly used by hikers in the course of our trips, so it behooves us to let the forest know how they can best manage facilities for the hiking public.

You can do just that by attending one of their four open house sessions.  This is an important opportunity to get your voice heard on a process that will affect hikers for many years to come.

The proposed five-year program of work, as well as additional information regarding recreation opportunities, can be obtained at any of the Olympic National Forest offices or on the web at: http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/olympic

The dates and locations of the meetings are:

  • May 20, 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  Carrie Blake Park, 202 N. Blake Ave. Sequim, WA
  • May 22, 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m Olympic National Forest, 1835 Black Lk Blvd SW. Olympia, WA

For those who are unable to attend the meetings, but would like to provide their comments on the proposed plan of work, comments can be emailed to Brad Paul at bpaul@fs.fed.us until May 23, 2008.

Thank you for speaking out for hikers!
